Edit to add: I’m only frustrated. I don’t expect my employer to accommodate me fully (as I understand they can’t accommodate for every thing), and I wouldn’t bash my employer intentionally. I have been working on looking for a remote tech job as then I wouldn’t have exposure to my allergies. This post is mostly my frustration in the workplace with allergies.
I’ve kinda shared this in a different thread but I’m angry enough still that I think it’d apply here too.
Today, I found out that my employer can’t accommodate my food allergy even when it is fatal.
I’ve gotten beyond frustrated with my coworkers when I have REPEATEDLY told them I have a fatal allergy. One of my coworkers came in today with peanut butter cups they made, and handed it out to other employees. Sadly, I didn’t have my EpiPen due to it no longer being usable (planned to call my doctor for a refill).
I told my supervisor I couldn’t work a full shift today due to the exposure that is literally life/death. I can’t have any exposure to peanuts as it’ll trigger anaphylactic shock.
Thought because of the fact that food allergies are recognized as a disability via ADA they’d have to do something to help. But I guess not idk anymore.
I messaged my doctor when I got home and asked for a note affirming my allergy in case I need it. I’m just frustrated and even more eager to seek a remote tech job now.
