So a bit about me: I'm in the UK and I used to work for a Care Agency looking after elderly people in their own homes. My daughter was diagnosed with a chromosomal disorder when she was 3. It causes learning disabilities, behavioural issues and a range of health conditions. Fortunately, in my daughters case, nothing serious.
The day we received our daughters diagnosis was really tough as you can imagine. Probably one of the toughest days myself and my husband have ever had. That evening I was due to work. I called my boss and asked for the evening off. I was happy to take it as annual leave, I just wanted to be at home with my husband so we could talk (and cry) together. My boss said no. Said 'if it was just talking, it could wait until tomorrow'. Couldn't believe she could be so heartless. Straight after I got off the phone, I call my GP and he signed me off for a week so rather than let me miss one shift, they had to cover a whole week instead. I was also pregnant with our 3rd child so when I left to go on maternity leave, I didn't return.
