I applied to an overnight freight position at Home Depot last month. In the offer it asked me if I accepted $17.50/hr which I did accept. I have the screenshot and everything so I knew when to show up for orientation.
I go to orientation then a few days go by and it's my first day. I'm told to go watch videos for training and hours later I start looking through the computer to change my direct deposit and I notice my pay says $16.50/hr. Being paid $1 less/hr is $160 less each month and nearly $2k less each year. It adds up, especially for someone at a job like this. This isn't a cheap place to live either.
I thought maybe it was an error or showed $16.50 but since I'm overnight it adds the extra $1/hr. I wait 2 days until I can speak to the store manager. I talk to her right after we do the “Home Depot chant” — fuckin great. She says “No associate is hired above $16.50/hr. You must have mixed it up with another Home Depot”.
I go through my phone and find the screenshot that shows the wage and address, to which the store manager brushes off as an error. And when I push back she pulls the freight ASM aside for a few minutes which I thought was annoying. What couldn't be said in front of me? The ASM comes back and basically says the same thing. Fighting it was hopeless. I wonder how nonchalant the store manager would be if she was paid thousands less than she was offered. I went to lunch and never went back
