Hourly Employee Lunch Meeting

Hi everyone, this is my first time posting here, but long time follower, and now I have a question. I work in California for a big-ish company that has generally been very good to me. I can honestly say that, especially compared to many things I’ve read here. I’m an hourly employee working from 8:30-5:30. Here’s the deal: once a month they hold a 1 hour All-Staff meeting at 12/lunch time. They do announcements and updates during that time, and I’m expected to be there. Food is provided, although I have food allergies and I’m only able to safely eat what’s ordered about half the time. I’ve always taken my lunch break after this meeting without issue and have my own packed lunch ready to go. Then today I was told that the All-Staff meeting is supposed to be considered my lunch break, even though I’m sitting through a meeting with food I can’t eat… I still took my lunch right after as planned today, but I guess they’re going to crack down on this. From what I’ve read, hourly employees are required to be given an uninterrupted 30 minutes minimum for lunch, I think. Does this sound right? I’d like to bring up my counterpoints respectfully. I also recognize that it’s only once a month, but it’s always on a really busy day where I just want a break to myself! Thanks!
