How can it be legal for employers to fire you for refusing to work overtime?

Not my fault Jimmy over there caught the sniffles and can't come in and now it's my problem. I have a life too. I have my own obligations such as college, and personal life. I didn't get fired if anyone was wondering. I am actually taking certification classes to become an EMT but also want to go to college to pursue my main career plan. But basically, our instructor told us that the field is like this, and I thought that it was incredibly nonsensical and should be illegal. I like the health side of medicine and being an EMT does look like it will have some great ups and even great downs. But the overtime stuff is crossing the line and needs to be changed. I do understand that the field of being an EMT is very important and needs us, especially if short-handed in some moments, but since…

I do understand that the field of being an EMT is very important and needs us, especially if short-handed in some moments, but since that's the case, EMTs deserve much better compensation if that is to be expected. Just my opinion of course.
