Hello! This is my first time posting here. I am currently a part time worker at a local mom and pop bakery and I work about 20-21 hours a week while also balancing my college workload.
My hours have been getting cut recently and at first it was just a day off every now and then but now I’m barely making half of what I was making before and this is happening to all of my part time coworkers. When one of them asked the owner and manager why she’s cutting hours, she said she wants to prioritize full time workers. The only people that have stayed working at the bakery through Covid have been us part time workers and the full time workers she’s prioritizing are not fully trained (we are expected to train them) and they have very little desire to actually learn. Whenever I work with the full timers, I have to straight up tell them to go help customers. This is a front of house customer service job so I’m shocked that my boss hasn’t noticed and/or talked to them about their unwillingness to do their job. We have a coffee stand inside the bakery that’s run by a local chain (like how target has Starbucks stands in their stores) and even the baristas there who only show up 1-2 days a week have noticed that something is up.
I really don’t want to switch jobs or pick up a second one because my boss is genuinely really cool and the schedule is very flexible and accommodating and i love my coworkers but I can’t afford to lose hours like this. How should I ask my boss to increase my hours back to what they were before and is there any way to negotiate if she says no or wants to keep prioritizing full time staff
