How I got fired for “stealing” from my job.

Obligatory Throwaway. This actually happened the day before yesterday. I (F20) worked at a popular corporate restaurant that’s famous for burgers. Think Big Mac. I’ve worked here 3 years & still, only make $12/hr. Yesterday afternoon, one of our new employees accidentally rang in a sandwich incorrectly. This was a specific order (a bun with pickles & mayonnaise) As the sandwich came up, she caught it mid mistake & told the cooks, went back to fix it, etc. They pushed the sandwich off to the side & everyone continued on about their day. About an hour later, I still see the sandwich sitting in the “window”. I asked my coworkers if it was dead. They told me yes, so I asked my MOD if I could have it instead of throwing it away, he said he didn’t care so, I put it in a togo bag & put it to…

They told me yes, so I asked my MOD if I could have it instead of throwing it away, he said he didn’t care so, I put it in a togo bag & put it to the side. My plan was to bring it home to my son (M3). We’ve been struggling lately so, this was incredibly helpful for us.

I wrap up for the day, grab my kiddos sandwich & catch the bus home. I greet my son & say bye to my sitter. I bring it to my son & he’s ecstatic, obviously. I leave him to his sandwich & trucks & go to the living room to relax when my phone rings.

It’s my general manager. To make a long story shorter, she said that she saw on camera where I stole a “meal” & “hid” it. I explained to her that not only was the food dead but, my son & i have been struggling extremely bad lately & that I asked MOD & he told me, “i don’t care.” She told me that’s unfortunate but, nevertheless it’s corporate policy that what I did qualifies as stealing & is an automatic termination & I shouldn’t have asked MOD but, her. Tried to resonate with her to no avail, obviously.

I feel like I was wrong but, I really wish they didn’t fire me for it after 3 years. Just puts me in a shittier predicament. Whatever. I’ve thought about fighting it but, to who? I did take food that wasn’t mine, but I asked! And, it was going in the trash anyway?
