How long can my boss claim to be on doctor ordered medical leave?

My boss didn’t get his annual bonus, because it’s based on peer reviews, and his peers think he’s an asshole and terrible at his job. This is a large corporation that gives generous bonuses to managers and he probably lost out on $25K. He threw a tantrum, threatened to quit, and ended up leaving over a month ago. He claimed he was sick. He left work early after telling people near him he was going to quit if he didn’t get his bonus. It seems like a massive coincidence that he said he’d quit and then fell ill minutes later. He hasn’t been on email for 6 weeks at this point. We’re in a very high stress industry and no one could get away with that – let alone the guy who makes more than twice what everyone else makes. He allegedly has a doctor’s note excusing him from work and he’s out on FMLA. I know he’s at home trying to find a new job and collecting his salary. However, his personality is terrible, so he’s probably struggling to find a new role, especially without a referral from his current employer.

I can’t stand the guy. He’s terrible at his job, acts like he’s helping the second sales checks on things, then doesn’t do anything, and throws his tasks at everyone else. He works 40 hours and not a second more. Others, making less than half what he makes, work 60. He’s arrogant and I’d prefer he never returned.

However, nearly everything that’s his responsibility has suddenly become my responsibility. I don’t make his salary, so his duties shouldn’t be mine. How long can he get away with this? I’m sure he can find a doctor to write a note, but surely this can’t go on forever, considering this is a fake illness! I’m so stressed out and shit falls apart when I don’t do his job. I respect my coworkers, who are overworked and underpaid, too much to just ignore things.
