How long has the middle class been “forgotten”, anyway?

I’m watching Bill Clinton’s acceptance speech for the ‘92 Dem nomination. In it, he states that he accepts the nomination on behalf of America’s “forgotten” middle class, among other constituencies. This speech is over 30 years old. So exactly how long has this fabled “middle class” been forgotten? Did they ever really exist at all?
