How often are non-competes enforced?

I live in NYC and signed a non-compete that last 6 months after employment. I want to go and work for a direct competitor, but am worried they may come after me then. I am a senior manager, but not in the management team. The employer I also want to work for days they get non-management level employees from competitors all the time. If I get an offer, can I accept it and tell my current employer? Alternatively, can I accept it and just tell them I am quitting (with notice) and not say where I am going (or lie)?
