How realistic was this threat

I work for an organization that sometimes gets government funding to run different programs. My program received government funding for the first time this year. Status reports aren’t technically due until Spring 2023 but there’s a cabinet shuffle happening right now and I was asked today to submit a status report…today. I told my boss that it wasn’t feasible and for an extension for the end of the week. They didn’t even bother asking for an extension for me they just got mad and said that if I didn’t do it today I’d be risking the program’s funding. As I said, this is the first time I’ve ever dealt with government funding and I’m not sure how realistic the assertion that asking for a couple days to submit an impromptu report would result in losing funding/not receiving further funding. I’m curious if anyone has experience with this and can tell me whether that’s a legit concern or this was my boss and their boss being manipulative. I’m in Canada & it’s provincial funding
