Just a quick breakdown, I’m job hunting but am currently employed and don’t have a ton of pressure to take the first job offered. I have some management experience in a couple backgrounds but neither are a retail setting.
I have a phone call tomorrow regarding a Store Manager position. It may not even be a full-on interview yet. They want to talk and ask a few questions. This has only been communicated through a text and this is the first time they’ve reached out. I did some snooping to connect the job position to who was texting me and it is a Store manager of a buy cars/used car/car parts store. The job looks appealing enough, it atleast doesn’t seem like a scam from what I could find online. Pay seems great, indeed/Glassdoor reviews aren’t too bad and mention good benefits, etc… My concern is I have no idea why I’m being considered in the first place. I had to double check that I had applied. I found I did but it was hidden who the company was at the time. I think I applied because it was that simple “1-click apply” kind of thing.
My management experience is split between a couple years over a Recycling pick up service for a county solid waste and 3 years supervisor in a jail. And my current position is in a large steel yard but it’s not a resale setting of any kind and it’s not REALLY a management position but my supervisor will tell us it is so I’m saying it counts.
It’s not a glamorous field but truth be told it’s one I just find interesting. Recycling, scrap, metal, etc… is just interesting to me in a way that finance, stocks, etc… are interesting to another. This feels like you’re just faking sounding interested in an interview though.
What sort of tips and tricks have worked for you for selling yourself for a job in a field you aren’t really from?
