HR just sent an email saying any work travel outside of normal working hours is unpaid

I am fired the fuck up, holy shit. I am a non-exempt employee in the US. I work at an outlier office 5.5-6hr from our main hub, or about an equal amount of time in flying just because of airport waits, the drive to the office from airport, etc. In august, we are all being required to come into the hub city for a big work event on the weekend. There are 4 other cities people are driving in from that range from 2 to 7 hours away. We need to drive there Friday at least in part outside of work hours (the work day on Friday is 8am-11:30am). Then everyone has to work an event Saturday from 7am-5pm. After that, we have to do the 6hr drive home. That whole drive is unpaid for everyone besides the person driving apparently. I’ll be traveling with 4 people. I’m going to…

I’m going to end up with like 9hr of unpaid travel that weekend according to their fucking policy. And then I have to travel later that same fucking week, again largely outside of working hours, unpaid!

Best part is they’re definitely going to require us to flex time off the week before so that those hours on Saturday don’t end up overtime.

It’s the same shit with flying instead of driving. Required to travel outside of work hours? Fuck you, it’s unpaid! They require this travel fairly often as well.

My boss is salaried but is a saint and she’s so mad. So, so, so mad. Immediately she’s preparing to challenge this. There’s also a provision that if you’re working during travel (like making a PowerPoint or something dumb), it’s paid. So she said now in her eyes I am always working on something if I’m traveling and higher ups can approach her if that’s an issue. I at least feel glad knowing she’s going to fight this so hard

I’m not signing that travel contract at this point, no fucking way
