Husband fired because I won’t provide a dr’s note?

To make a long story short I had a dr’s appointment out of state. My husband had forgotten to request off work that day to watch the kids and called in the morning of his shift. Is this legal? What the fuck do we do? We cannot survive off of my income alone and we can’t file for unemployment without documents from these people who refused to even give us pay stubs at one point.

Edit: he’s been looking for another job for over a month. Construction, city jobs, MCDONALDS! Literally anything and it seems impossible to find anything that can sustain life 🙁
