I used to think boomer managers/company owners were the curse of the world who manipulates and exploits workers. So when my 30 year old interviewer shook my hand, welcomed me to a new industry, and promised me that I would get a payraise once I got the hang of things, I didn't second guess it – afterall they're young, not in US, and not gonna be exploitative, right?
They offered me a desk job and said since I'm new to the industry, they'll give me minimum wage till I pick things up and learn to be independent. It's a desk job, it's near my home, and I knew it won't take long to learn – so I said sure. The average wage is $15 per hour more than the minimum wage, so I figured 3 months in minimum wage won't matter.
I went to my manager with factual proof showing I've done my bit. But apparently she's not convinced. She said it's too early to change my wage. That people usually get a pay bump after a year, that it's an annual thing. When I reminded her of her promise, she just said “I don't remember that, it's not in the contract”.
Well congratulations for being a lying manipulative prick. I'm gonna drop in my 4 weeks notice (was in contract) today and now when I do apply to another job they can't say I'm new to the industry and fuck me over.
