I am starting a job that pays me to drive my own vehicle (by the mile), and I just found out that the majority of the driving they will have me doing will come out of my own pocket. When the miles are added to the part they pay for, the mileage pay doesn’t even cover gas, let alone upkeep.

I guess I could lead off by saying the hourly pay is still pretty nice for my area, so I will probably still do it. I'm upset though because that means what I though was a feature bringing in extra money will actually be eating into my hourly wages. The facility I will be working for is less than 10 minutes away from my house. It was my understanding going in that I would be going to this facility in the morning and then heading out into the surrounding areas to do deliveries, getting paid by the hour and the mile. I was just told (a couple days before I start) that they want me to do deliveries that are over an hour away, and will not be compensating me for gas to get there.

These miles (while highway) would be probably at least 3/4 of my driving for the day, considering the paid miles are stop-and-go in residential areas. I was originally satisfied with the milage pay (0.62/mi), since it seemed to not only cover gas in an an average mpg vehicle but also have some left over for maintainance. And driving all day every day will certainly eventually bring up some maintainance issues. Tires, oil, brake pads, sensors, etc. at least, but could possibly accelerate major vehicle expenses as well.

But now they want me to pay for gas to drive an extra 100+ miles or so a day, well over what I would ever consider for a commute unless the pay was exceptionally right. The extra costs for this will likely far outweigh what they are compensating me for even just in gas.

Since the facility is local and they are having me drive so far away, is there at least a way I could claim those miles on my taxes or something? I'm disappointed that what I thought was a great opportunity still ended up trying to exploit my labor and my paycheck.
