I don’t care if it’s a “burden on businesses”, the government should mandate all job listings include the salary range.

I'm 32, I've had a number of jobs over the years, and the one thing that never changes is that 80% of the job postings I see hide the salary range. It's so stupid. I get why businesses/organizations do it, they want the upper hand in negotiating and to try and pay new employees as little as they can get away with, but as a job hunter it's such a pain in the ass. Oh look, here's a job that sounds interesting, and I think I'm relatively qualified, or at least qualified enough that it'd be worth applying. Oh, wait, they offer zero information about compensation. My options are now 1) forget this job and move on, or 2) spend my limited time and energy writing a cover letter, tweaking my resume, filling out their clunky job application interface, and waiting days or weeks to hear back, and then waiting…

My options are now 1) forget this job and move on, or 2) spend my limited time and energy writing a cover letter, tweaking my resume, filling out their clunky job application interface, and waiting days or weeks to hear back, and then waiting for an interview, to only THEN find out the job pays $5,000 a year less than what I'm making now and this was all a waste of my time.

Fuck “burdens on businesses,” the government should make it illegal not to at least display ranges.
