I fell through poor quality flooring at my job and injured my ankle, no worker’s comp and now my employer is taking money out of my paycheck.

EDIT: posting for a friend since he doesn't have a Reddit account. I will add photos of the unsafe workspace ASAP. EDIT 2: Here are photos he took of the area he sustained the injury from. From my friend:

At my workplace they have these 1 inch thick plywood floor over about a 2-3 foot drop. One of these flooring sections broke under my foot and I fell down and injured my ankle. I took two days off of work to recover before my scheduled days off, so I had 4 total days off before I went back to work.

When I got my paycheck this week I was $200 short, and when I asked management what the reason was, they said it's because sick days are not fully paid and because I took two days off right before my scheduled days off, I wasn't entitled to worker's compensation for my injury.

I live and work in California and I'm not sure what the labor laws here are like, so I'm hoping there will be anyone that can give me some advice on how to move forward.
