Following three very difficult employers in hospitality within a year, I recently started working at a husband and wife run restaurant. Both worked in hospitality throughout their twenties (him a chef and her FOH) and it is obvious they worked very hard to get where they are.
The interview was very relaxed but they clearly communicated how they ran the place and their values. They considered my experience and didn't lowball me during the pay negotiation, agreeing on a rate ~10% higher than my last position. They even acknowledged that I was finishing college and were realistic about how long I'd be sticking around.
They have been incredibly patient and gracious during my training, even sending me home with food after work. The staff seem happy working for them, and the supervisors share the owner's patience and respect for the servers. Services are run like clockwork, with very few hiccups or complaints, and it's obvious that they do enough business to make it all work.
It has been a positive experience seeing that there are competent employers out there who really value staff and in-turn, win themselves. Conversely, I'm really kicking myself for staying with some pretty exploitative employers throughout college.
