I work in IT and just started working 4 months ago and I got hired on because they needed to fill in a position they fired. That person got fired for asking too many questions
“How do you do this”
“How come this”
“What does it mean when”
“You've been here for 5 months, you should know this stuff by now. You are causing us to be behind on our work because we're helping you with yours.”
Now to me.
“Please do not ask too many questions unless you really need too. A lot of internal things we do have tutorials which you can look up. If you are still have issues, then ask for help and we will assist when we arent helping a client. Last guy got fired for too many questions. That's what the 2 week training is for, to prepare and get you learning on the systems etc. We cant be behind because of one person.”
And 4 months down the road, I was doing tasks like I was supposed to and 3 thing.
- I knew what I was doing 60%
- I thought I knew what I was doing. 30%
- I did not know what I was doing (asked for help during those times) 10%
For the times I thought I knew, were the times I was just scared to ask a question worried that it was common sense and they would tell me I should know it.
So we do monthly checks and the first month wasnt great. They said it's OK because I'm new.
2nd month was a little worse.
3rd was the same as the first
And 4th wasn't getting any better.
After a those months, they fired me with a
“You've finished your training months ago and you've had months of experience but you still aren't doing things right and we can't have this. We are behind because you are doing things slow and taking your time. If you needed help just ask. Dont just assume. I'm sorry but I have to let you go.”
Yes, part of it was me being a slow learner and always cautious on things before submitting but also I feel you should be able to ask a question when ever you need to, it helps grow and learn from your mistakes. Everytime I did ask a question I never had to ask it again because I remembered it next time it came up.
