Been working at one of the big UK supermarkets since the start of august stacking shelves at night. They originally advertised part time 1 or 2 shift contracts which was perfect for me as i was just about to start college. The contract was until January but kept hearing that everyone would be kept on past that they just always advertise as as temporary contracts at first.
They fired 6 of us at 5am, all students. Their reasoning;
- We arent flexible enough.
- We are difficult to show new things to and learn quickly and become faster at the job because we arent in enough, but were happy to advertise and give out the hours in the first place.
- They are now overstaffed and paying out too many wages even though they cant get everything done in one night because there arent enough people.
- They are still actively hiring, and said it would be unfair to fire the brand new starts so instead they fired all of us to give them a chance, obviously hoping they will dedicate their lives to the place.
We were all working every saturday night, (some friday night too) their worst shift which they always complained was understaffed. There was constant unlimited overtime any night of the week because they are understaffed and its getting a whole lot busier on the run up to Christmas now.
When we originally got hired, there was double the numbers, but people left or got fired quickly. They then tried hiring through an agency and only 1 out of 16 people turned up but are now saying they are overstaffed with the few they have left.
All new colleagues have to get multiple reviews and we were getting told we were doing good and improving. Guy who was standing in as a team lead said all students are fucked and are getting fired because they cant dedicate their lives to the place.
Openly advertise part time shifts, during the interview / hiring process absolutely creamed over the fact that a big group of students had applied then fired all of us for not working over the 1 or 2 shift contracts we had.
so basically, fuck ASDA.
