Started a new job recently operating a machine in a factory. Time clock system is the classic counts the minutes if you're late, but clocks you out right at quitting time even if you stay working a minute late.
Cleaning my area takes anywhere from 20-30 minutes, you don't really know until you open the machine up at the end of the day. Because you don't get paid to stay late, I always shut down 30 minutes before quitting time.
Ended up finishing everything with less than 2 minutes until the end of the day. Walked over to the computer to wait for the bell to ring and pulled out my phone to kill the last bit of time. Immediately my boss comes around the corner and instructs me to go help others sweep up if I have extra time. Walks away and the ending bell rings.
The implication made is so insulting. You're lazy. You like to waste time on the clock. You stand around on your phone instead of helping your coworkers. My boss even complained that it's a common problem they're tackling! Imagine creating a system that incentivizes people to clean up early and being upset they have a few minutes at the end of the day.
