Well, today I had my annual review. I've been in my position for approximately year but I feel like it's been 10 years. My background has been primarily in restaurant/retail management for the last 7 years of my life. I transitioned into human services after I decided to pursue my Bachelor's in Social Work. I have desire to help others who faced similar situations I did as a child and create positive change.
Long story short, I am a Administrative Assistant for a non-profit foster care company. I love the people I work with and the families we care for- HOWEVER. My job has been plagued with tasks falling onto me that are expected of my staff whom have Bachelor's Degrees and are paid much more than I am. I interact with clients daily, assist with the placement process for foster care children, monthly billing, hiring and onboarding for three different departments, completing terminations, coordinating events, acquiring donations, and so much more. This is a full time position that requires me to work late into the night and I am expected to be readily available in case of emergencies.
During my review, I was told I meet expectations in all areas and exceed in several. I always like to ask what I can do to improve in my position and I was met with “I can't really think of anything of the top of my head”. I had brought notes highlighting my current tasks, added tasks, receiving 100% for audits with the state, etc. I even brought other job openings displaying the current market value for Administrative Assistants in our areas. I asked for $18.00 an hour, nothing wild. I was met with- “well, we can't do that for you- but I can give you a 5% raise”.
I went from $15.25 to a whopping $16.01.
I feel like an absolute joke.
