I have a weird question about overtime.

I’ve got into an argument with one of my co workers. In my opinion overtime is something completely voluntarily and not something normal. I don’t do overtime and I don’t care if my coworkers count on me. It’s still my job and all of the people are my coworkers and not my friends. I work 20 hours a week part time next to school. He said, that sometimes it should be completely normal to do overtime for the coworkers if they can’t handle the work alone and that I should do some. For info: I just started there but I have a „no overtime policy“ from the experience of my past jobs. So, is overtime something everyone should do sometimes? Is it something the boss can except? (I’m not a native english-speaker, sorry)
