So right after I lost my job a few months back, I found out that my Mitral and Tricuspid valves are failing and as a consequence of the valves failing, my left ventricle is so severely dilated that my heart is literally pressing into my stomach and suppressing my appetite. Because I haven't been able to get another job with health insurance, I had to launch a gofundme to have any hope of being able to afford the surgery that I will literally die without.
On at least 5 different occasions, in the final round of interviews, the interviewer has asked me “will I need to take any time off in the near future” in a tone and manner that left absolutely no doubt that they found my gofundme. Unfortunately when you google my name, my gofundme is literally the 3rd result you see and my name is unique enough that there is zero doubt that it is me and my gofundme does have a photo of me.
Most recently, I had one of the people that I interviewed with call me up on their personal phone and tell me that the reason I didn't get the job because they found my gofundme page. They didn't have anything they could give me to prove it if I wanted to file a lawsuit against them for medical discrimination and they weren't willing to go on record for me. I literally had a subordinate to the hiring manager tell me I wasn't chosen specifically because I need open heart surgery.
I am unable to get a job because I had to launch a gofundme to pay for the surgery that I will die without. I am absolutely terrified now. I honestly have no idea what to do. I am getting screwed over just because I want to live. I am doing everything I can to get a job as soon as possible and I'm just not getting anywhere. I feel completely hopeless. I dont even qualify for disability since I can do everything I need currently without any additional help. I can still work, I can still go grocery shopping, I can do chores around my apartment, but I am literally sleeping 12 hours a day and constantly exhausted because my heart function keeps getting worse every day.
I want to work! I will happily work while in the hospital as soon as I am out of the ICU after surgery. I can be back in the office a week after being discharged from the hospital if my previous open heart surgery is anything to go off of. I just want someone to give me a chance…
