I needed a fast job, just something for a few months while I looked for something better. I applied as a shift lead at an ice cream parlor. The manager told me they were having all kinds of serious problems with their staff. They really needed someone to whip everyone into shape.
Then I was informed that shift leads have a lot of responsibility as there are no assistant managers and the GM bounces between 2 locations.
The interview was going fine. She offers me the job and tells me the pay is “minimum wage plus tips split equally with your coworkers from that shift.”
So, in other words, you want me to come in an babysit an unruly staff that will be nothing but headaches for the exact same pay they make.
Additionally, any days I open I have to come in 2 hours early. If I close I leave an hour and a half after the doors are locked. That means I am only making $7.25 an hour for those portions of the day. So now I am actually making less than the high school kids since they only are working hours when they are earning tips, but I will be there 10ish hours a week at minimum wage.
I should have trusted my gut. I had seen that job posted for over 6 months. It all makes sense now.
