I waited 6 months unemployed in order to be hired on as an apprentice at a nail salon, only to start as a receptionist. Each month I was told “we are doing everything we can to get you in!” and blamed it on the state board for the apprentice licensing (understandable). I have been doing nail art on Instagram for 7 years and have always wanted to be licensed. From January-June I was just WAITING for a txt/call hoping to start working again.
Finally June 1st, starting as their receptionist. I was told “if you can master the front desk, then you can start as an apprentice.” I stupidly agreed to it because I just needed money and wanted to work/ get experience.
Last Saturday, I ended up over charging a client by $3 and overflowing a pedicure chair a bit by accident, and tried my best to make up for it and not repeat mistakes, cuz I was just working out the “new employee” kinks, right?
Well, today I get a txt from the owner saying “this isn’t working out” and “I seem more interested in nails than the job I’m needed to do.” NO SHIT, my dumbass waited 6 months so I could learn to DO NAILS, not sit at a desk and fold towels.
I say “fired” in quotations because I wasn’t even officially hired. I wasn’t in the system and got paid in cash ONCE last week. I did around 30 hours of work ALL under the table. She said she would mail me the rest of my pay, but I have no idea how much it’ll be.
My family thinks it’s a race thing, considering I was the only POC at an all white salon in a very conservative area, but I can’t speak to that.
Fuck them for wasting my time, and fuck me for being a dumbass when it comes to small businesses.
