Hey all. I work for a locally owned nursery/retail business in one of the most expensive cities in the country(USA)
I took on a part time job in May to just give myself a little padding and have some spending money. I run my own small online business that is not yet profitable.
I have been working there a little over a month– I have a ton of experience with plants and I am definitely well versed in latin names and troubleshooting, plant keying, which are skills that take a long time to acquire.
I'm recently diagnosed, 30 something y old female autistic +ADHD and I'm still kind of learning what my boundaries are after taking a few years off and just doing gigs to cover bills so I could focus on mental health. I am finally successfully medicated and the combo is seeming to work for me and I have been doing really well at my job. I'm really bad at picking up on red flags in a work environment due to my inability to read cues, so I'm hoping ya'll can help me make a decision.
I am currently making 19/hr. If I take over shift leader position in the indoor plant department, I would be managing inventory, and managing people. In my city the minimum wage is 17/hr. I have never negotiated a raise in my life before. I'd probably ask for 30 and accept minimum 26 in this environment of high turnover (younger employees with a lot going on).
The other thing is I'm still technically a probationary employee. I would want to get that status removed if I were going to be moved into a management position.
So my questions are: Is it worth taking on more responsibility or should I keep coasting in my relatively comfortable position with less obligation?
If I do negotiate pay, how do I do that? I have a ton of experience but I have never been offered a promotion in a company.
what are red flags to look out for? Right now my orange flag is the high turnover at the nursery, but I feel like a lot of that is just the nature of retail during covid.
