So I’m a black 16 year old female teen and I work takeout at a chain restaurant. Legally I can’t be a server so I package orders for customers and mainly couriers (uber, postmates, etc.).
This past Monday a table of boys entered and started whispering the N word at me (hard r) and continued to try to do so discreetly, consistently making louder disrespectful remarks as I walked around the area. I deliberately tried to stay out of the dining area but this new boss who started working here recently kept ordering me to run food to some tables. Mind you we have a small restaurant, there were three tables seated with two servers scheduled.
The servers were casually chatting, on their phones when manager told me to run a pizza to the table with the boys. Seeing how this is not personally my job to do so I politely began to say that i did not think it would be best because of what had been going on, but mid sentence he shut me down and said, “I don’t care take them the food.”
I don’t want to write too much but it went back and forth, me trying to speak and him shutting me down but now he was yelling. All of a sudden he walked out of the kitchen and stood in front of me yelling that if I didn’t take the food I should go clock out. I was really overwhelmed and confused I started crying and began to beg him to take the food. He starting screaming curse words and told me to take it.
At this point I began to panic and turned to the server (the food was for her table she just wasn’t paying attention) and asked her to grab it. The manager then shouted no, and stood blocking her path. I may be young but i know what a power trip is. I refused again and he began shouting for me to go home. I left crying and texted the rest of my managers (including my boss) an outline of what happened.
This is the third time I’ve been targeted working here. Twice by a manager and One of my coworkers called me (n**ga) 5-6 times on shift. My manager fixed this by taking one of my shifts away so we wouldn’t work together.
Anyways my message was read but not replied to by all managers for a week, so I quit.
I work in a predominantly white establishment and don’t really know what to do. My head is all over the place and I have several bills to pay.
(TL: my manager forced me, a 16 year old takeout girl, to serve a table calling me slur’s. What should I do next ? Can I take any actions?)
