My family and friends are asking why have two weeks off? Well I worked in a customer service role straight out of uni, after recovering from being sick (won't go into details but was sent to the hospital). For the first month my contract was for a government department in the UK that paid high OT incentives and made it enjoyable/bearable.
2 weeks in one of the managers nominated me in that department for employee of the week. Not much but I always work hard at what I do so it was finally nice to be recognised.
A week before the queen passed, we get told you have no choice but you're moving to a fashion retailer popular in the UK. I'm like ok but I had no warning. Foreshadowing, my 4 day training fell on the queens funeral – a national holiday in the UK. We were told we had to work or not be paid for a week and that was an ultimatum. I sucked it up and went in and not only that but my 23rd bday was the same week. The 4 days training was shambles. Completely outdated policy led to my direct de-development. I was always asking questions and on the call floor none of what was said in training was true. Multiple coworkers said the managers tell them different things.
Then finally Christmas hit. When it was off season it was chill customers that are regulars, but it got to the point in November and Dec that the calls were nonstop even if you did 8am-8pm shifts. It was unbearable. For minimum wage and 0 bonuses for performance it felt like a kick in the balls. In the grand scheme of things, a job that was stable is good in our economy but it was not worth it.
Anyway I finally got a new salary job and hopefully I will never be on minimum wage again.
Thanks for hearing me out. Sorry for the long post!
