I left my new job… on the second day… please tell me I didn’t overreact.

To make the story short, I’m a nail tech. I moved from a shitty salon where a coworker was smoking heroin in the bathroom, I brought it up to my former boss and he didn’t give two flying fucks. So I got hired at this new, fancy place. I literally took a pay cut because I wanted better working conditions and the training. I have been doing this for a while but the owner is Instagram famous locally for his nails and they are really, really good. Who wouldn’t jump at the opportunity to train with someone like that? They told me they would pay me minimum while they trained me and then they would up my pay once I was officially taking clients. They told me to show up early with my documents. I showed up the first day, waiting for the onboarding and all that. Nope, it’s just…

Nope, it’s just me shadowing and following the manager around. I never signed anything nor clocked in, nothing. And they expected me to stay until the end of the day.

I didn’t receive any training, I was just looking at a bunch of girls do something I already know how to do. I asked another hire who’s been there for three weeks if she’s been trained at all or if she’s just shadowing the other workers. She told me she was doing the latter. Yeah no.

Anyways, the owner shows up in the middle of the day to tell me to get a model tomorrow (which is today) to show her what I can do. She wants me to bring my model as early as possible. I ask my mom. Thing is, I have to pick her up from the next town over. Anyways I show up with my mom in tow, and the manager cheerfully tells me that I already have clients. Excuse me? How?

She says that another worker called out and that she just passed those clients onto me since I’m the only one available. I told her no. I said I was asked to bring my model as early as possible, and here she is. I’m not gonna make her wait all day for other clients. The manager looked annoyed but I stood my ground. Also, I didn’t say it but I thought it. How are you gonna pay me? At the training rate? At the pro rate? I haven’t even signed anything, how do I know I’m getting paid for this? She said it’s ok, and asked the owner to show up and take those appointments. The owner looked annoyed as well.

Anyways, I did my mom’s nails, I took her to lunch and back home… and I didn’t go back to work. I’m not sure how I’m gonna get paid for this. And there’s a feeling in my gut not to take this job. My mom and my bf told me to stay cause I was so excited about it but… my gut says no. Idk guys.
