Rough Draft Resignation letter

Opening
I am resigning from my position as a forestry technician with the USFS. I’ve listed the most impactful reasons for my choice to separate from the Agency. I write this in the hopes that management will consider the negative impacts it’s had on its employees.

Body

My accomplishments:
I’ve been employed with the agency since Feb of 2017. The first five years Ive spent countless hours trying to improve my crew, forest and region using the tools available to me as a GS4. I saw medical as productive and important route to show my ability to take on extra responsibility and contribute to the agency. I became a GS4 Forest EMS coordinator, took on regional duties during a promotional detail and began working on national projects by the time I was a GS5. I considered myself a productive employee even with my GS5 Hotshot fire season schedule.

Punishment:
I don’t want to get into the specifics but I ended up with a permanent letter in my file and a 21 day unpaid suspension. The Forest supervisor and regional forester decided that my coworkers and I were guilty until proven innocent. They proposed termination right away and without the outcome of the investigators. Dragged our careers through the dirt, took our fire season away while saying “this is not a punishment”, left us financially stressed, mentally exhausted, anxious and when the investigation showed the allegations unfounded we were still punished under the general umbrella “conduct unbecoming a federal employee”. The union missed our filing dates to fight back and left use with no recourse.

The employee they decided to stand by ended up being fired for lying about all of it and we still took our punishments on the chin because “we were past the filing date for the union”. It’s sad when these occurrences are chalk up as “it’s fire man we get the shit end of the stick”. If you thought you were protecting a victim in this case you ended up creating many more through your lazy uninformed decision making. I would like to see an outside entity review the Forest supervisors punishment records to show the disparity between fire and non fire employee punishments.

Leadership
Fire leadership from the forest level all the way up to the region did what they could to help us and support us during and after the fact. I’ll always appreciate that. I just hoped that the forest management wouldn’t of just turned their backs on us.

Nature of the work
I’ve been hospitalized from a tree strike on fire and a respiratory burn on a prescribed fire. I’ve hid injury after injury to make sure I can get overtime to help supplement my $19,000 a year salary. Why would I want to continue to do this type of work when the environment is trying to murder me daily and my agency management officials have proven to me on more than one occasion that I’m expendable.

Because of my shattered mental health and toxic working environment I’ve been in therapy twice a month since that last punishment. My home life and working life has been full of anxiety and depression because my lively hood could be taken away if management decides to propose termination one more time based on any allegation true or not.

A pride and passion for my career has turned into contempt for an agency that employees me.

Summary:
I quit all of my collateral duties and removed myself as EMS coordinator. I see no reason to do extra for agency that doesn’t do extra for us.
