I need some advice about my current job.

I work at a small business (and when I say ‘small’, I mean I am literally the only employee). I work for a notary company, which basically sends out professional document people to help others sign off for refinances, home purchases and others. The pay is absolute shit, I get paid $14/hr and have been given the responsibility of nine people’s jobs, and doing things that have absolutely nothing to do with the job. I’ll post a short list below: Answering every single email that comes in between 9AM – 5:30PM, calling and emailing every title company that owes us money on a signing more than 25 days old, destapling and sorting every single packet of paper that my boss makes and sorting it in order (he usually gives them to me once every month just to make it all unbearable to do when I have 90 other things to…

Answering every single email that comes in between 9AM – 5:30PM, calling and emailing every title company that owes us money on a signing more than 25 days old, destapling and sorting every single packet of paper that my boss makes and sorting it in order (he usually gives them to me once every month just to make it all unbearable to do when I have 90 other things to do), emailing every single notary not signed up with text alerts (we have THOUSANDS), with a week break in between, so I have a one-week time limit, covering his finance work with Quickbooks, making sure every single check we receive matches in the system, assigning notaries to signings (more calling, emailing, etc), and like 90 other little things, but all at the same time. Ten people should be doing this, not one, and if I don’t put myself in overdrive to do it every day, I’m afraid I’ll fall behind and never dig myself out.

When I first started working there, there was me and two other employees. The fact that one of them quit within a week of me being hired should have been a huge red flag, but I was getting paid $14/hr, when I was just getting paid $9/hr at McDonald’s, so I couldn’t really afford to quit. A few months after that, the only other employee quit, and all of their work was forced onto me.

Then there’s the problem with my boss. He is one of the biggest.. I think you can infer where I’m going with that. Two weeks ago, a company emailed us asking us if we wanted to use his services to potentially get more clients. My boss ignored all of his emails, calls, texts and everything, and had me deal with him directly, which isn’t necessarily weird, but then the week after that (or last week), one of our title companies emailed us asking if we were interested in using that guys services, and, since me and my boss use a group email, I could see the thirty different lies that my boss told the title company, completely trying to slander this guys business for absolutely no reason.

Whenever a notary makes a mistake (honest mistake or not), the very first thing my boss does, if it happens when I’m not there, is call the notary and start threatening legal action immediately. Most of these notaries just have this as a second job and are trying to make ends meet.

He leaves all sorts of vulgar and completely unprofessional comments in our system, mostly about other notaries or ex-employees.

We had a notary back out of a closing with more than enough time to find a new notary because her mother went to the hospital and the notary wanted to be there for her. My boss sees the email and has me remove that notary from our system immediately. This was a notary that we had used.. 60 times in the past year?

There was a notary in WA that we had go out for a closing, and when the original package was sent back to the title company, the title company tore the envelope, called us, said the notary sent them a ripped up package and demanded that we have another notary go back out for free. Even after I caught them on their bullshit, my boss still called the notary that went out and told them that we wouldn’t pay them! He used it as an excuse to keep all of the money and just steal it from the notary.. so I actually paid them out of pocket on PayPal because I was sick of my boss’s crap.

There’s a billion other shady or (what I believe to be) outright illegal things he does. I’ve worked there eight months, and last month, I asked for a raise, or the opportunity to work from home (since my job is 25 miles away), and he looked at me like he was seriously offended and said “make me more money and I’ll think about it”. I just don’t know what to do. This is the highest paying job I’m going to be able to get and I’m stuck. Sorry if this all seemed like jumbled and disparate rambling, but that’s probably because it is, because I have to go back in tomorrow and I really just don’t want to if at all avoidable.
