So, at the beginning of this month I finally got a job at a local carwash after 8 months of being unemployed. At first I really liked this job but it's gotten shitty very quickly.
I am currently on day 7 of 10 day work week, ie* I am working 10 days in a row. Many have expressed skepticism to this claim of mine, citing that surely it would be illegal to make someone work 10 days in a row. However, it seems like my employer is exploiting a loophole in labor laws as in financial terms, my 10 day work week is recognized as two separate weeks of pay and thus it is perfectly legal.
I suffer from chronic foot pain which hundreds of dollars worth of products has been unable to resolve. Since I am standing for the vast majority of my shift, I am in near-constant pain and to add to the bullshit. My schedule changes at random and its rare that the shifts in a single work “week” will stay the way they were initially assigned throughout the entire week. Also, 12 hour shifts are very common and I personally think that's obscene for a carwash.
I learned that prior to me being hired, the wash apparently had a few employees quit because the employer refused to work with their schedules at the community college. It's important to note that all of these things are new changes caused by the wash being bought out at the beginning of this year. The old owners were allegedly decent but the new owners of the wash are brutal and unforgiving.
As far as I know, there are no Unions for automatic car-wash workers because why would there be? And even if I could join a union, I'm sure I'd be fired for some stupid reason. Our employee training videos made it clear that the wash company isn't ok with unions.
That's all.
