I quit a terrible job, and I feel great!

I've been with a tutoring company for close to 5 years. I have a BS in Mathematics, a BS in Statistics, an MA in Mathematics Education, and I am two years into a PhD in Mathematics and Statistics Education. Given all of my qualifications, one would expect a decent pay rate. Unfortunately, this company stands firm at $15/hr. It might sound okay if you're not making any money, but the problem with that is you are not guaranteed any hours. I averaged 2 hours a month for them over the past two years. Throughout the years I've worked there, they have asked for insane requests regularly. Commutes of over an hour without any ability to invoice for travel. Asking tutors to assist PhD candidates with their dissertation for $15/hr. My personal favorite request: Take exams for students. After all, if a student pays for a tutor, that means the tutor…

After all, if a student pays for a tutor, that means the tutor must do all of the work!

Today, they asked me to tutor someone in college statistics. This is not totally unrealistic. However, they were looking for someone to do so in Mandarin. They wanted someone qualified to tutor a college level STEM class in a different language. They of course offered the respectable pay of $15/hr to do so.

I decided that was the straw that broke the camel's back. I called them up and asked to terminate my account as a tutor. There was no questioning why I wanted to leave. There was zero effort to convince me to stay. They just said okay and sent me the paperwork. It is laughable how little they care about their employees.

I am fortunate enough that I don't need this job to survive. I'm thrilled to finally be done with them!
