I'm an associate director for a non profit center. I was tasked with leading business operations (and our largest program and teaching) but every time I suggested a change or improvement it was disregarded. My boss and the other associate directors wanted things fixed but didn't want any part in changing their behavior to fix them. After 1.5 years of frustration, I decided I'm out.
Today I met with my boss and gave him my notice plus a succession plan. I advised him that my position does not need to be filled and how he can use my budget to better the center. We need more people doing the work, not at the top. I advised we promote all three of my direct reports and add a new position to assist with their work. Those three people work on 30+ small, medium, and large projects doing communications, events, and business administration. We need them and we need them to be supported and happy.
I showed how my responsibilities would fall into the center's positions and provided a budget. A couple of hours later my business coordinator is in a panic because the director wants to replace my position with someone else who will make more than me!
We don't have money to hire the staff we need to do projects (without me leaving) and now he wants to spend even more money on a replacement that we don't need??? All three of my staff said that if he does that they're going to start looking for new jobs. Two of my employees said they'd try to leave same day.
I'm shocked by his stupidity but not surprised. This is a big part of the reason I'm leaving. I don't even have another job lined up yet but I just couldn't deal with it any longer.
