I quit my toxic job. A food service story.

First time posting. Just need a place to vent. I (32f) quit my toxic fast food assistant managers position. I grew up poor, so the moment I turned 16 (2006) I started working. I bounced around a few places before I settled at a local pizza place. I was there for a good while, and I'll admit I wasn't a good employee at first. I had kids, learned responsibilities, etc. Fast forward to March 2017. I started as a pizza cook at a franchise. Won't say which once. I hardly ever called off. I covered extra shifts when they needed me. Pulled double shifts. Worked my way up to management in the summer of 2022 when a huge amount of staff quit because of new owners. The new owners wanted alot of changes in staff, labor, etc. New owners replaced their “area coach” and the new one was a shark,…

New owners replaced their “area coach” and the new one was a shark, and his blood in the water was our brand new general manager. He had her(gm) cut labor so low on a staff we literally just hired. It felt like exploitation how much our area coach was asking of us.

He literally told me that my state's increase in labor wages meant he expected more productivity from the staff, and that we needed to work harder. That was the first time I felt like I was wearing clown makeup. I was the meme in that moment. You know the one. I didn't take vacations. I never called off. I kept busy with cleaning jobs and gave my all. Covered shifts when we had call offs and no one to cover.

Halloween 2022. I requested it off because kids, ya know? I volunteered to come in anyway and got denied. Said they were good. They were in fact not good. One coworker said they had to beg people to not walk off. No surprise when I walked into a mess. No dough to sell. I had to make dough that morning on top of my morning responsibilities. I went to my gm, who was on shift the night before and asked why was it left in the state it was left. She was in a bad mood. It was obvious, and I was having none of it. I gave her attitude right back, admittedly the wrong response.

She told me that if I didn't want to be there, then don't come back. So I didn't. I wasted no time, in less than a week I'm already working for their rival's pizza kitchen.

Sorry for such a long post. I just needed to get it out somewhere.
