Antiwork

I remember my one “fuck you I quit” moment and it feels good thinking about it every now and again.

Long story short. I worked at Blockbuster and a coworker and I had swapped shifts. Which turns out we were operating on an old schedule. I had covered a day that she ended up actually being scheduled for and she covered a day that I WASN’T actually scheduled for. Which all came to a head on a Friday night I was out with friends and got a call that said I was due to come in to work and at the time I had only seen the old schedule (unbeknownst to us) and I was scheduled for Thursday. Manager confirms that I was operating off of the old schedule and was actually scheduled for Friday. My replacement had come in on Thursday and even though I was scheduled they put her to work anyway. So I tell the manager to give her a call to cover my shift since she never actually covered my shift. Makes me call her.

So I call the coworker we do a back and forth she’s not going to cover my shift and I call the manager back and just say. Look I’m out sorry she’s not making it in I’ll just see you tomorrow when I check the updated schedule. And she gets all stern and shit and tells me to get in right now we are swamped blah blah. No threat of my job or anything, but way out of line given the circumstances. So I tell her I’ll be right in. I was with my wife (girlfriend at the time) and another couple we were friends with and I told them I had to go to work real quick. I grab my shirt and my lanyard, they drive me to work. And I come to the longest line I have ever seen in my life and the busiest store. The manager and one other employee are there behind the counter. I pop my head in and say, “Hey.” Manager looks over and as she opens her mouth to say some thing I toss her my shirt over the counter and say, “Fuck you I quit.” The amount of dropped jaws was glorious.

Sadly the only reason I was able to pull that off was because I got the job for something to do during the week after my primary job while my girlfriend was living a couple hours away at school.
