My boss lost his temper with a coworker today because he had some other issues and was taking it out on her. I told my boss in mid conversation that we should take a minute to breathe and calm down and he turned to me (he does this many times and it usually makes everyone laugh) “you shush.” And I finally stood up to him and said “don’t tell me to be quiet, I’m trying to help you.” And he said “you’re making it worse so just stop.”
This was over a very small event we are making to say goodbye to an employee that he wanted to throw. He just came out of a meeting which I assumed he was already upset about, but used his energy to get upset at her.
Afterwards, I went to my desk and he went to his. I took a phone call because a few weeks ago we agreed to help a separate department. He overhead the call and messaged me in a brisk and angry tone. “I don’t know who or what told you to help that department but finish up who you’re helping and direct them to someone else, that’s their issue.”
I’m about a month away from getting my degree and praying I get to change jobs. After he was starting to be a little more kind, he did me a service in making it easier to quit. I just wish I could right now.
The thing is, I’m afraid he will retaliate. A few months ago, he did not like the work of one of our elderly custodians and he sent a strong email to have her work audited. She was removed from our area and that’s what I’m afraid he will do to me… his secretary who he does not communicate with.
