I work at least occasionally with grocery stores. There is a lot of waste, and I am able to accidentally damage the odd item or buy one or two extra things per food order (there is a certain amount of “shrink” within the order totals in case prices change, so $5-15 extra doesn’t raise red flags).
I think it’s sort of fraud, a la the folk song “One Piece at a Time” about the auto factory dude who stole one part at a time until he had a whole car. I’m also not using my usual Reddit account for this because I’m worried about backlash.
My friends live in a rural area of my state with few resources. He has cancer. She has a progressive brain condition.
They won’t see 2030, and he can’t work much longer. Lost insurance and nearly the house, are relying on patchy remote work and friends to meet even the most basic needs. And they’re older, so even if they were OK, they would not be able to retire. They’re to the point where they literally get leftovers from her former job of 35 years where she practically lived (there is a full kitchen and cooks on staff).
They’re the kindest people I have ever met. And this shouldn’t happen to anyone- besides, a poor diet can make their health issues worse.
So on every other order or so, I add an item that falls within the allowable cost variance, keep it for them, and let the huge corporation with a billionaire jerk for a leader take the hit.
I’m usually a rule follower and could face huge life consequences for technically breaking the law over and over over time. But it’s just not moral to let my disabled friends starve while some Silicon Valley asshole goes to space.
