I've been thinking a lot about minimal wage, living expenses and worker exploitation after joining this sub.
If the current system can be changed where the government pays for universal early childcare, universal healthcare and unemployment (I know, may not happen in our lifetime, but one can dream) and we all know the government can afford these…
And…
here's the change that could dramatically reduce worker exploitation – get rid of the 'contractor' designation. As a company, when you want work done, you can't put all the expenses on the so called contractor. I'm thinking gig economy would be very different because companies would have to pay competitive wages and cannot outsource legitimate expenses to the working class.
As much as being a contractor sounds appealing (higher hourly rates and flexibility), it's really often a trap… and if you're benefiting from being a contractor, you're usually getting paid a lot more than the employees who do similar work.. so get rid of it!!!
