This is obviously a huge your mileage may vary situation, but it has definitely hit close to home in this regard. Between three people, we've all been applying to jobs. Myself, just because. I'm already a union employee and make great money, but I thought it'd be amusing.
My wife is currently unemployed due to medical reasons, but looking to get back to work after getting her health more in check. Previously she was doing medical/insurance coding type work.
A friend of ours has a long background in skills that include machining, welding, things of that nature. He's employed, but is fed up with his current employer's revolving door of new employees that start out making more than him and the additional workloads that fall on him because of it. Looking to find a new employer who does similar work and hopefully snag himself a pay raise.
So we've all been applying for our own reasons and in about 6 weeks, not a single one of us has gotten a response from anywhere, not even even fast food.
These jobs must not be as desperate as they make themselves out to be.
