Why do employers do crap to retain good employees?
Prior warning, this may be a rant.
I handed in my notice 4 weeks ago. Yes I know, way too much notice, but I'm legitimately the only person who can do my job fully. So I was giving them time to make plans to cover for me.
For years I have done this job, and done it well. I pushed back and turned down on numerous times when they tried to move me up the ladder for various reasons.
Due to covid, we lost staff, and I became the only person who knew 100% of my role. I took on a manager role without the manager pay. It half assed worked in my benefit, because for 2 years I'd ask for a raise, and would get one no questions asked.
End of last year I told them I had enough, I'm done being a manager (without the pay of one), I'm tired of the added responsibilities and stress.Hire someone to actually manage or I am done.
So we hired someone. This someone has been here since December. This someone couldnt figure his way out of a hole he dug himself. He calls/texts me after hours min of 4 times a week. On my personal phone, and flips if I dont answer. Manages to avoid any training we set up to learn the job he is managing. I've had enough, so I'm done. Walking away without anything lined up.
Radio silence about my notice. To the point that I resent it again, asking for read receipts to confirm someone knows I'm leaving.
My last day is Friday. They ignored the fact I'm leaving for the last 4 weeks. Today they called me into a meeting. Apparently I'm now worth a $25k increase if I stay. I politely said it wasn't worth it. So they bumped it to 30k. I said still not worth it. They asked me to tell them exactly what I needed to be happy. It was with great satisfaction that I got to say I'll be the happiest person alive at 5pm on Friday. And again on Monday morning knowing I'm not walking back in here.
