- I will not be a dick. I will endeavor to be friendly, approachable, and empathetic.
- I will follow through on my promises and if something happens that doesn't make this possible I will tell you as soon as possible.
- I won't ask you to do anything I either haven't done myself or am not willing to do.
- If you have either asked for or are due a raise or promotion, I will keep you in the loop as we progress towards a decision and timeline. This leads to the next point:
- Whenever possible, I will try to see things from your perspective. I will remember that the things important to you should also be important to me.
- I will not, under any circumstances, micromanage. I hired you because you were highly qualified and capable to perform the duties you've been given. Unless you give me a reason otherwise, I will trust you to complete tasks as assigned.
- I will empower you to do your best work. If you don't have the needed or correct equipment, tools, or resources, I will endeavor to get them for you.
- I will never question or deny a PTO request if you have earned the hours and it doesn't interfere with a mission-critical activity or event you were advised of well in advance.
- I will be your advocate if you've been mistreated in any way by another manager or co-worker.
- I will abide by best practices for being a diverse and inclusive workplace. This means zero-tolerance for harassment or abuse of any kind.
Did I miss something? Add it in the comments. Maybe we should come up with a collaborative document that can become a kind of “management reform” manifesto?” Regardless, I'll try to do my part.
