I Wasn’t Taught A Damn Thing at Orientation

I was hired by a big named grocery store as a “Service Clerk”, It's just a fancy name for a cart pusher, but I digress. When I first went there last week for Orientation, I was brought to a room with a computer where I was put on a site with a bunch of work-related courses. I was left alone with no instruction on what to do, so I just did as many courses as I could. There were about 9 of them. 4 hours passed. In the end, the person in charge asked how I did. I managed to do all but one course. She looked at it and said, “That's the one you were supposed to do!” How the fuck was I supposed to know that? She didn't tell me anything. So I ended up doing that course at home to save time. The whole course was about…

She looked at it and said, “That's the one you were supposed to do!”
How the fuck was I supposed to know that? She didn't tell me anything.

So I ended up doing that course at home to save time. The whole course was about things like the cash register and how to operate it. I was very confused because I was told on the phone that I'd be pushing carts, not working a cash register.

In fact, I specifically told them that I had social anxiety and that I couldn't be a cashier. That's why they gave me the cart job. So I wouldn't have to talk to anyone.

Anyway, skipping ahead to today. I enter the Customer Service section and I pretty much asked “What am I supposed to be doing?” Only then was I finally told that, yes, I'm a cart pusher.

That's not the end of it, There are a bunch of other things they did that I just don't understand.

All the courses during orientation said things like “Your manager will now do a training exercise based on what you just learned.” Not only did that not happen, but I also don't know who my manager is.

Orientation also had forms talking about checking off areas you see during a tour of the building. I was not given a tour.
Halfway through my shift, a coworker told me that I could take a break. I was told there was a break room, but I was not told where it is. I ended up sitting on some stairs during my break just to get off my feet.

At the beginning of my shift, That same coworker handed me a vest to be visible by drivers in the parking lot, but he didn't tell me where he got it. By the end of my shift, I went back to the customer service area and asked “Where do I put this?” And they didn't know either.

I left work a half hour early (I clocked out and everything) And NOBODY has said a thing. I thought I would have been called by now asking me why I left early. But I haven't heard a peep. No texts or emails.

The lack of communication is astounding. I wouldn't be shocked if I could just hide in the bathroom all shift and not get caught. In fact, I might do that on Sunday.
