Since most of you guys may be Americans, this thread may not apply to you, however I want to share my personal experience after I left my job and started to work the German state.
My last boss wasn't a dick as most of your bosses are, but I hated the job nontheless. Shitty work and shitty pay. I quit and was unemployed for quite a while.
Months later I applied for a job at a German state administration – basically I'm one of the guys who decides whether a refugee is allowed to stay in the country or not. It's emotionally quite demanding to listen to all of their stories, but on the plus side there are big benefits:
– great pay (compared to working hours, etc)
– 39h a week, meaning 7:48h a day + 30 min break you have to take
– 30 days of (payed) vacation, 35 if you are somehow disabled
– schooling courses if you want and need them
– you are allowed to put your 8:18h somewhere between 6:00 ó clock and 20:00 ó clock. Meaning if you come at 6:00 am you can leave at 14:18. Even if you get in a minus for a few weeks nobody cares as long as the job is done properly.
– basically no boss. Of course, if I'd start doing pretty shitty work, my station boss would have a talk to me, but as long as everything isn't done horribly, my boss won't give a fuck.
So I don't know what my advice for you Americans out there is, but maybe your administrations offer similiar benefits. Go and catch them and let your boss hunt sales on his own. And if you are an European, I'm sure most of your administrations will be quite comparable.
