I work for a major cell phone company, can they do this?

We have a monthly meeting that is on our off time and is mandatory we attend (even though we don't get paid for it). It's over a 30 min drive away at a different location. We had a meeting this morning. Yesterday I texted my manager letting him know I had a mental health appointment scheduled and wouldn't be able to make it to the meeting. I went into work today and it was chaos with customers so I hit the floor as soon as I could. When I went to the back room, my manager was on the phone and he motioned for me to stay back there.

After he got off the phone, he stated the phone call was the district manager and any “top performers” who didn't show up to the meeting this morning, but are showing up for their shift this afternoon are to be set home.

My manager asked I “not make a scene” but I would need to leave and he would now have to close for me bc I didn't show up this morning and was recognized.

When I started to cry, he said he was sorry but I couldn't be allowed to stay for my shift tonight and collect a pay check after not showing up to the mandatory meeting this morning. Meaning I won’t get paid for today bc I was sent home and we’re commission based so I’ll be short from today.
