If your manager tells you that someone is sick, and you were at work with them immediately beforehand, always say something along the lines of
“Oh yeah, they seemed a bit off”
“Oh, I thought they were just tired”
Help them lay down the foundations. Even if they aren't sick and the manager finds out somehow, all you said was that they seemed tired.
