As a paramedic I worked 24/48. Then three 12s a week. Now I'm an ER nurse and work two 12s a week along with my wife. Our schedules alternate and we both have long scheduled stretches off in our 6 week blocks. It also helps to open our schedule up to pull our kids out of daycare. My stretches off are 10 and 9 days straight. That leaves her and myself with the chance to always work more if we want.
There's many non patient care jobs in hospitals that also work 12s. If you can put up with working weird hours, hospital work is were it's at. I don't get calls or emails outside of work.
