“I’ll be really disappointed if you’re going to work for the competition…..”

This happened three years ago now. The company I was working for created a new executive position above mine, they only told me after I found the advert online. They were a terrible company to work for, but they were money, awful to work for despite my best efforts to change the culture from within but I wanted the title, and I deserved it. I submitted my application and told them if I didn't get the job I would be leaving.

They made me jump throug hoops for the position and I knew I was the best candidate they had apply but they still wouldn't award it to me. They tried to convince me to stay regardless, but still hadn't offered me the position.

During this time I was head-hunted by a competing company and, long story short, of course I took the position on my own terms. I called a meeting with senior management and tendered my resignation.

My then boss was salty AF and said, “I'll be really disappointed if you're going to work for our competition”. Like it was a threat, or something. I'm not a good liar, but by this time, I'd given them a million chances to offer me what I wanted, and I was really bloody forward with my expectations, so I just replied, ” well shit, I'm sorry you feel that way”, and I left it at that.

We never spoke again during my four week's notice.

I'm still with “The Competition” to this day. They actually give a shit about employees, a rare thing in my industry. We're building an empire that treats employees well and pays even better. We're also smoking the competition.
